Perched on a hilltop above the entrance to the Avakas Gorge near Peyia, Viklari — also known as 'The Last Castle' — is an open-air grill house celebrated as much for its sweeping views over the Akamas Peninsula and the sea as for its food. The concept is refreshingly simple: there's no long menu, just perfectly cooked charcoal souvla. Choose pork, chicken or a mix, and it arrives with a generous bowl of fresh village salad, famously massive homemade chips and bread.

Guests consistently praise the melt-in-the-mouth barbecued meat, the relaxed atmosphere and the beautiful natural setting, with many dining outdoors under a leafy tree canopy at large sandstone tables. It's a popular stop for walkers exploring the gorge, groups and day-trippers, and prices are considered good value (around €15 per person for a full plate). Open for lunch Tuesday to Sunday, it's an authentic, unpretentious taste of traditional Cypriot barbecue in one of Paphos's most scenic corners. Well worth the trek off the beaten track.
